About Matthew

Matthew Barnes’ experience in teaching and learning spans over three decades. Matthew began his formal career in education in 1999. Prior to that he taught countless tourists how to kayak and while imparting the natural and historic the wonders of Southeast Alaska as a kayaking guide. From calming nerves as a new paddler sits in kayak for the first time or navigating the complex components of leading a school community, Matthew’s experiences run the full range of educational variables. This range of experience continues to produce positive results, be it within Title 1 schools, working with large ELD populations, supporting world class Alpine ski racers, or mentoring new educational professionals.

Matthew claims that the best job and hardest job he ever had was that of a high school principal. All of Matthew’s positions have been serving the community where he lives, this component adds a wonderful and challenging element to the work. A commitment to culture, growth, community, and spirit drives Matthew’s work. When Matthew isn’t hard at work within the educational world, he can be found with his wife Suzanne working on their flower farm, running, cycling, skiing, or spending time with their six children.
